What is a licensed practical nurse (LPN) ?
In Missouri, an LPN is a practical nurse who the Missouri State Board of Nursing licenses and recognizes.
How do I become an LPN?
In order to become an LPN, you must first complete a practical nursing program that is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing (MSBN), then you must pass a licensure examination.
What is required to complete the Practical Nursing program?
The OTC Practical Nursing programs require a high school diploma or GED before beginning. Each Practical Nursing program is an eleven-month course of study that is approved by the Missouri State Board of Nursing. OTC does not currently offer an advanced placement option for students from other nursing programs.
After satisfactorily completing the OTC Practical Nursing curriculum, you will then be eligible to apply to take the National Council Licensing Examination for Practical Nurses (NCLEX-PN) to become a licensed practical nurse (LPN).

NCLEX-PN Age and Educational Requirements:
- Successful completion of MSBN approved practical nursing program and statement affirming the applicants education
- Good moral character
- Two years of high school or its equivalent
- At least 18 years of age
- Applicants from non-English speaking countries must submit evidence of English proficiency
How long does it take to complete the PN program at OTC?
After the student completes the prerequisite general education courses, the actual length of the practical nursing program takes just under a calendar year to complete.
OTC Practical Nursing–Springfield has two concurrent classes. One begins in January and completes in December, and the other begins in August and completes in July.
OTC Practical Nursing–Table Rock has one class that begins in mid-October (B Block) and completes in mid-October (A Block).
OTC Practical Nursing–Lebanon has one class that begins in January and completes in December.

Freshman first 8 weeks:
- Didactic is delivered online.
- In-person class activities, including labs will be required on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays at various times. Student must be available when activities are scheduled.
Freshman second 8 weeks:
- Didactic is delivered online.
- In-person class activities, including labs will be required on Mondays and Wednesdays at various times. Student must be available when activities are scheduled.
- Clinical will be one day a week. The date of which will vary depending on the location.
Seniors through duration of program:
- Didactic is delivered online.
- In-person class activities, including labs will be required on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at various times. Student must be available when activities are scheduled.
- Clinical will be 2 days a week. The date of which will vary depending on the location.
The program requires a flexible schedule because the program itinerary changes from time to time.
