Minimum Credentials Required for Medical Laboratory Technician:

  • An earned American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) certification
  • And an earned Master’s of Science Health, Science Education

NOTE: 3 years or more of experience as a credentialed Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) is preferred

Minimum Credentials Required for Auto Collision Repair:

  • 5 years of employment experience in the industry or a related field
  • An Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) in the program field of study (ASE or ICAR certification)

NOTE: Applicants with an earned Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education preferred.

Minimum Credentials Required for Accounting:

  • 5-10 years industry experience
  • And an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in Accounting
  • OR, be a licensed Certified Public Accountant (CPA) or Certified Managerial Accountant (CMA) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

Minimum Credentials Required for Agriculture:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Agriculture from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Agriculture
    • Animal Science
    • Horticulture
    • Agronomy

NOTE: applicants with credentials in AG Business and Veterinary Science will also be considered

Minimum Credentials Required for Art:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Art from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Art
    • Art History
    • Graphic Arts

NOTE: applicants with professional art career experience will also be considered

Minimum Credentials Required for  American Sign Language:

  • Demonstrated and documented American Sign Language (ASL) competency at near native fluency, including but not limited to:
    • Missouri Interpreter Certification Level 4 or higher
    • Sign Communication Proficiency Interview (SCPI) Advanced or higher
    • Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Certification
  • And an earned Associate level degree in a deaf related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education OR equitable experience in the Deaf community
  • And experience teaching ASL at the Post Secondary level

NOTE: desirable qualifications include an earned Master’s degree in a deaf related field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, American Sign Language Teachers Association (ASLTA) certification, Missouri Interpreter Certification Level 5, SCPI with a Superior or higher rating, and/or being a native signer

Minimum Credentials Required for Automotive Technology:

  • 5 years of employment experience in the industry or a related field
  • An Industry Recognized Credential (IRC) in the program field of study

NOTE: Applicants with an earned Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education preferred.

Minimum Credentials Required for Behavioral Health Support:

  • An earned Master’s degree in a Social Service field from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • a Social Service field
    • Psychology
    • Sociology
    • Social Work

Applicants can meet the minimum credentials threshold for Biological Clinical Sciences either through earned Academic credentials or Testing Experience:

Minimum Academic Credentials Required for Biological Clinical Science:

    • An earned Master’s degree in Biology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
    • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
      • Biology
      • Biochemistry
      • Bio-Tech
      • Marine Biology
      • Microbiology
      • Virology
      • Zoology

Minimum Tested Experience Required for Biological Clinical Science

    • An earned Master’s Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in Exercise Science with course work in Anatomy and Physiology OR
    • A current license to practice medicine (such as a D.O., D.D.S., D.C.M., D.P.T., D.V.M., M.D., M.S.N., M.Ph., N.P., or P.A.)  OR
    • An earned Bachelor’s degree from regionally accredited institution of higher education and a minimum of 2 years experience practicing as a licensed professional in a related health care field (such as R.N., R.D., etc.)

  • An earned Master’s degree in Biology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Biology
    • Biochemistry
    • Bio-Tech
    • Botany
    • Marine Biology
    • Microbiology
    • Virology
    • Zoology

NOTE: applicants with credentials in Biology or Exercise Science with course work in Anatomy and Physiology or a current license to practice medicine, such as a D.O., D.D.S., D.C.M., D.P.T., D.V.M., M.D., M.S.N., M.Ph., N.P., or P.A. will also be considered

Minimum Credentials Required for Business and Marketing:

  • 5-10 years industry experience with current credentials or licenses,
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 hours of graduate credit hours in Business-related fields.

NOTE: an earned Master’s of Business Administration (MBA) is preferred

NOTE:  courses in the Associate of Arts in Business (AAB) curriculum must be taught by a Master’s Degree teacher or someone who is considered professionally qualified, based on Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) accreditation standards

Minimum Credentials Required for College & Careers:

  • An earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

Minimum Credentials Required for Computer Information Science:

  • An earned Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
    • OR an earned Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 5 years of relevant work experience
  • Experience using/teaching computer programming in C#, .NET, C++, and/or Java
  • Experience using/teaching database technologies such as MSSQL

 

  • Availability to teach morning and afternoon seated classes is strongly preferred

  • An earned Master’s degree in Chemistry from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Chemistry
    • Biochemistry
    • Chemical Engineering

NOTE: applicants with any level of earned credential from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in either Chemistry or a qualifying field may be eligible to teach lab courses

Minimum Credentials Required for Chinese:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Chinese from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Chinese
    • Cultural Studies (Chinese)
    • Intercultural Communications
    • Linguistics
  • And candidate must be fluent in Chinese

Minimum Credentials Required for Communication:

  • An earned Master’s degree in English or Communication from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Communications
    • Journalism
    • Media / Mass Media
    • Speech
    • Theater
    • Drama

Minimum Academic Credentials Required for Criminal Justice:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Criminal Justice, Criminology, or an earned Law Degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Criminal Justice
    • Criminology
    • Law (JD)
    • Social Work
    • Sociology

Tested experience may be substituted for the minimum academic credentials for CRM-250 (Policing in America).  Tested experience is defined as minimum of 5 years employed as a police officer.

Minimum Credentials Required for Construction Technology:

  • 5-10 years industry experience
  • Or an earned Associate of Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and industry experience and current teaching experience

Minimum Credentials Required for Culinary:

  • An earned Associate level degree in Culinary Arts from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And and earned ranking from American Culinary Federation of Certified Culinarian or higher
  • And a minimum of 2 years of past industry experience in the Hospitality or Culinary field in a supervisory or management position

Minimum Credentials Required for Dental Assisting:

  • A background in and current knowledge of
    • dental assisting
    • the specific subjects they are teaching
    • and educational theory and methodology consistent with teaching assignments, e.g., curriculum development, educational psychology, test construction, measurement and evaluation
  • Faculty providing didactic instruction must also have an earned baccalaureate degree or be continuously enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program at an institution that grants four-year degrees
  • Laboratory, preclinical, and clinical faculty must hold any current dental assisting credential required by the state in addition to a Dental Assisting National Board “Certified  Dental Assistant” credential

Minimum Credentials Required for Dental Hygiene:

  • Current knowledge of the specific subjects candidate would be teaching
  • Documented background in educational methodology consistent with teaching assignments
  • For didactic instruction candidates must also have an earned baccalaureate degree, or be currently enrolled in a baccalaureate degree program

NOTE: faculty who are dental hygienists must be graduates of a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA)

Minimum Credentials Required for Drafting and Design Technology:

  • An earned Associate’s degree or higher in a Drafting and Design related discipline from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And 3 years or more employment experience in Drafting and Design

Minimum Credentials Required for Industrial Maintenance Technology / Industrial Systems Technology :

  • At least five years of employment experience in Industrial Maintenance
  • Or an earned Associate’s degree or higher in an Industrial Maintenance related discipline and 3 years industry experience

Minimum Credentials Required for Diesel Technology:

  • earned Associate’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • ASE Certification (or ability to acquire certification in the appropriate ASE areas within 6 months of hire)
  • Valid Missouri teaching certificate with the Department of Elementary & Secondary Education (or be willing to obtain current teaching certificate in secondary and post-secondary education form the State of Missouri at the applicants’ expense)
  • Five years of employment experience in the industry or related field
  • Demonstrated current knowledge in course content
  • Ability to manage a lab space that is well-organized and will allow for safe, productive, and effective student learning
  • Available to teach daytime, evening, or weekend courses, as needed

Minimum Credentials Required for Economics:

  • An earned Master’s degree in  Economics from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Economics
    • Business
    • Econometrics
    • Finance

Minimum Credentials Required for Early Childhood Development:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education, Family Life Studies, Elementary Education, or Early Special Education from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And at least 5 years experience in Early Childhood Education or Early Childhood Development.

Minimum Credentials Required for Education:

  • Missouri Teacher Certification in some grade level or content area, grades K-12
  • And earned Master’s degree in Education or content-area field in which a candidate is certified to teach from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And 3 years very recent K-12 classroom experience

NOTE: recent experience as an instructor of DESE approved teacher edcuation coursework at a Missouri university can substitute for recent K-12 experience

Minimum Credentials Required for Engineering:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Engineering (all types) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Engineering (all types)
    • Physics

Minimum Credentials Required for Electrical Trades:

  • 5-10 years industry experience
  • Or an earned Associate of Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and industry experience and current teaching experience

NOTE: Licensed as a Journeyman Electrician is desirable

Minimum Credentials Required for Electronic Media Production:

  • An earned Associate of Applied Science in Electronic Media Production from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • and 5 years related industry experience

NOTE: teaching experience is preferred, but not required

Minimum Credentials Required for English:

  • An earned Master’s degree in English (either in Composition and Rhetoric, or Literature) from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
    • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
      • English (either in Composition and Rhetoric, or Literature)
      • Creative Writing
      • Journalism
      • Technical Writing
    • And prior teaching experience (either at the K-12 or Collegiate Level)

Minimum Credentials Required for French:

  • An earned Master’s degree in French from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • French
    • Cultural Studies (French)
    • Intercultural Communications
    • Linguistics

    • Linguistics

Minimum Credentials Required for Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning:

  • 5-10 years industry experience
  • Or an earned Associate of Applied Science degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education and industry experience and current teaching experience

NOTE: EPA Refrigerant Handling certification is desirable

Minimum Credentials Required for Health and Wellness:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Physical Education, Counseling, Public Health or a Nursing degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Physical Education
    • Counseling
    • Public Health
    • Nursing
    • Athletic Training
    • Exercise Science

Minimum Credentials Required for Hospitality Management:

  • An earned Baccalaureate degree in Hospitality Management and/or Business from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And  minimum of 2 years of past industry experience in the Hospitality or Culinary field in a supervisory or management position.

    • for NET 106, 206, and 216: an earned Cisco Certified Academy Instructor credential
    • for NET 202: completion of the Red Hat Academy instructor training courses

Minimum Credentials Required for Nursing (Practical):

  • An earned Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

Minimum Credentials Required for Occupational Therapy Assistant:

  • Occupational therapy assistant with a Baccalaureate Degree or higher or an occupational therapist with a Master’s Degree or higher from a program accredited by a USDE-recognized regional institution or the Accreditation Council for Occupational Therapy Education (ACOTE)
  • Previous experience as a COTA or as an OT supervisor for COTAs
  • Current unrestricted state license as an Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant or eligible for state license
  • Current certification from the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT)
  • Teaching experience in either classroom, clinical, in-service and/or continuing education presentations.

Minimum Credentials Required for Philosophy:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Philosophy from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Philosophy
    • Ethics
    • Religious Studies
    • Theology

Minimum Credentials Required for Religion:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Religion from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Religious Studies
    • Philosophy
    • Theology

Minimum Credentials Required for Physics:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Physics from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Physics
    • Engineering
    • Astronomy
    • Physical Science
    • Agronomy and Soil Science
    • Meterology

NOTE: applicants with any level of earned credential from a regionally accredited institution of higher education in either Physics or a qualifying field may be eligible to teach lab courses

Minimum Credentials Required for Phlebotomy:

  • An earned Bachelor of Science Degree in Health, Science, or Education from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And an earned American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP)  Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) credential
  • And 3 years or more of phlebotomy experience

Minimum Credentials Required for Political Science:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Political Science from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Political Science
    • Law (JD)
    • Public Policy
    • Public Administration
    • History

 

Note: Per Missouri State Statue, applications from candidates with an earned undergraduate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education, and a minimum of 8 years of General Assembly experience will not be denied due to lack of the above-listed minimum credentials

Minimum Credentials Required for Physical Therapist Assistant:

  • Maintain a current, or be eligible to obtain, and unrestricted Missouri State License as a Physical Therapist (PT) or Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA).
  • Demonstrate contemporary knowledge in course content and effectiveness in teaching assigned subjects.
  • Didactic and/or clinical teaching experience.

Minimum Credentials Required for Reading:

For Developmental Reading (000 level courses)

  • An earned Associate’s degree  from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
    • note: Read Right Certification is also required, but can be provided as on-the-job training

For College-Level Reading (100 level courses)

  • An earned Master’s degree in Reading from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Reading
    • English

Minimum Credentials Required for Sociology:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Sociology from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

Minimum Academic Credentials Required for Social Work:

  • An earned Master’s degree in Social Work from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:

    • Sociology

Tested experience may be substituted for the 18 graduate credit hours listed above (Bachelor’s degree still required).  Tested experience is defined as minimum of 2 years recent work experience as a licensed social worker.

Alternative qualifications (tested experience) may be used.  To be considered qualified through tested experience, a candidate must meet all of the following criteria:

  • An earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Formal recognition of competence in Spanish through an approved external language proficiency test
  • NOTE: previous classroom teaching experience is highly preferred

Minimum Credentials Required for Technical Education Curriculum (TEC courses):

  • An earned Associate’s degree in  from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And 3 or more years employment experience utilizing applied math (TEC 108) or in hiring employees (TEC 285)

Minimum Credentials Required for Technical Education Science:

  • An earned Associate’s degree in  from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • And 3 or more years of employment experience utilizing applied science skills

Minimum Credentials Required for Theater:

  • An earned Master’s degree in  from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • Or an earned Master’s degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education with at least 18 graduate credit hours in a combination of the following qualifying fields:
    • Theater
    • Drama

Minimum Credentials Required for Welding:

  • An earned Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education (or ability to complete an Associate degree within six months of hire)
  • Significant employment experience in the industry or a related field.
  • An industry recognized credential (IRC) in the program field of study.

Minimum Credentials Required for Speckman Tutoring and Learning Center:

For TLC 023 (Math Study Strategies)

  • An earned Baccalaureate degree in Mathematics or Mathematics Education from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

NOTE: prior experience in math teaching or tutoring preferred

For all other TLC courses

  • An earned Baccalaureate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education

NOTE: prior experience in teaching or tutoring preferred

Minimum Credentials Required for Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic):

For EMT-B Instructor:

  • Current Missouri licensure, National Registry, or other state license or certification as a paramedic
  • And at least 2 years clinical experience as an EMT-P, EMT-B, or licensure as a registered nurse or physician with at least 2 years clinical experience
  • OR successful completion of an instructor-training program that meets or exceeds the United States Department of Transportation EMS Instructor Curriculum which is incorporated by reference in this rule as published in 2002 by the U.S. Department of Transportation

For EMT-P and EMT-I Instructor:

  • Current Missouri licensure, National Registry, or other state license or certification as a paramedic
  • And at least 2 years clinical experience as an EMT-P, or licensure as a registered nurse or physician with at least 2 years clinical experience
  • Or successful completion of an instructor training program that meets or exceeds the United States Department of Transportation EMS Instructor Curriculum. Competent in adult education theory and clinical skills consistent with the most current EMT-P National Standard Curriculum and the National Scope of Practice for EMT-P

Minimum Credentials Required for Aviation:

  •  An earned Associate degree from a regionally accredited institution of higher education
  • 5 years of technical experience in the aviation industry
  • Ability to connect with the Aviation Industry
  • Expertise in one or more of the following areas:
    • the world of aviation
    • aviation weather
    • air traffic control systems
    • aviation safety
    • airline operations
    • air transportation
    • aircraft & engine components

In addition to meeting the minimum qualifications listed on this site, faculty who are assigned  to teach online must also complete OTC’s free online teaching certification course,  ONL-101: Introduction to Online Teaching and Learning, at least one semester in advance of a new online teaching assignment.
