What is Proctoring?

Definition: Test proctoring is testing overseen by an authorized, neutral individual who ensures the identity of the test taker.

How it works at OTC: Different classes use different types of assignments or activities as proctored events. Some classes have only one proctored event, some classes have multiple proctored events.  So, depending on your class – you may have very different proctoring experiences.
Regardless of those differences, all proctored events will have some things in common:

  1. You will need to bring an official photo ID to your proctored event.
  2. You should already be familiar with the requirements your instructor has set for your proctored event
    • are you allowed any outside resources (like a calculator or a reference website)?
    • when does the window for taking the proctored event open and close?
    • how long will you have to complete your proctored event?
  3. You should know your OTC username and password
    • this may sound silly – but many of us rely on our internet browsers to automatically fill in that information when we log in from home, so if you haven’t typed your username and password in by hand in a while – think about bringing a copy of it with you

You will likely have several options of how/where to take your proctored event. Typically you can choose one of the following:

  • take your proctored event at an OTC Testing facility
    • this option is free for OTC students, and there are testing facilities at all OTC campuses and locations
  • take your proctored event using a webcam
    • (we partner with a company called Proctorio who manages this process for us)
  • take your proctored event from a location of your choosing with a live proctor
    • some locations who agree to act as proctors for OTC students charge a fee (typically $20-25)

Please be sure to check with your instructor to see which of these options are available to you – or if there are additional options available as well.
