The Medical Laboratory Technician program has a selective admission process with an annual acceptance of 20 students.

About the MLT Program

The OTC Medical Laboratory Technician program is accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS). The OTC Richwood Valley campus offers this program. A medical laboratory technician is an indispensable partner in health care who performs a wide variety of medical tests on blood, tissue and other bodily fluids that assist physicians in making a diagnosis and guiding therapeutic decisions.

The OTC Medical Laboratory Technician program will prepare the students to:

  • Understand blood’s function, identification and to test  cellular components
  • Analyze data on diagnostic procedures generated from Clinical chemistry equipment
  • Identify and handle microorganisms in a clinical setting
  • Understand microorganism morphology, growth requirements and speciation
  • Develop skills in phlebotomy to include a variety of blood collection methods

Career Opportunities

In addition to employment in medical laboratories, graduates can pursue positions in research, crime labs, blood banks, veterinary laboratories and medical equipment sales. The Bureau of Labor Statistics states that the employment outlook for Medical Laboratory Technicians is expected to increase about as fast as average for all occupations.

The program encourages applicants to attend an MLT Program Informational session to learn what it requires prior to and during the application process. The OTC Richwood Valley campus offers MLT program informational sessions located in room 206 E. Please bring your degree audit with you to the informational session. No appointments are necessary.
