Computer Use Expectations and Requirements

In today’s computer-based society, it is imperative that students develop computer skills. Therefore, OTC students are expected to use online technology to assist in the learning process. At a minimum, students are expected to login to the online learning platform, Canvas, where the course syllabus and faculty information are located. In addition, students may be expected to further utilize online technology as required by the instructor. To access the Canvas site for this course, go to your MyOTC portal and click on the Canvas icon in the menu on the top of the screen.

Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Internet Explorer and Safari web browsers are all compatible with Canvas.  If you are having issues using one of these browsers, please try using another.  If you continue having issues, please contact online@otc.edu.

Did you know? Canvas has an app!  Download it for your Android or iOS device to access your course on the go (search for Canvas by Instructure or look for this logo ).  Check out the Mobile Guide provided by Canvas to learn more.

Counseling Resources

OTC is committed to and cares about all students.  If you, or someone you know is feeling overwhelmed, hopeless, depressed, and/or experiencing life stressors that are interfering with academic or personal success, supportive services are available.

Counseling Services provides free and confidential mental health services to help students manage personal challenges that impact emotional or academic well-being.  You can learn more at our counseling services website .

The college complies with Title II, the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA), and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973.  OTC makes every effort to ensure persons with disabilities admitted to the college as students or employed by the college are afforded all the rights and privileges provided to them by state and federal law.

Dropping the Course

You are responsible for understanding OTC’s procedures for dropping a course, which can be found on the Change of Schedule section of the Registrar’s page. The last day to drop this course can be found on the Spring 2022 Academic Calendar.

 

Please note a change in your schedule may have financial consequences.  See the Tuition & Fee Refunds & Appeals page on the Finance website for exact dollar amounts.  If you have further questions, please refer to OTC Policy 6.18 and OTC Policy 5.22 for more details.

LGBTQ+ Resources

If your legal name is different than the name that you listed on your application, you can update this by filling out a Change of Student Information form.  You can submit this form via fax, mail, email or in-person at Student Services.

If you would like to change your preferred (chosen) name, you can follow these steps:

1. Log into myOTC
2. Click on your user name on the top right, and select “my contact information”
3. Click the “Edit Personal Identity” button

Pregnant and Parenting Student Resources

Under Title IX, students who are pregnant or who may have just become parents are entitled to equal access to educational programs and activities.  Federal law requires schools to excuse medically-necessary, pregnancy-related absence and offer other accommodations for pregnant students. To discuss your options as a pregnant/parenting student at OTC, it is recommended that you contact the Title IX office as early into the semester as possible.

Proctoring Resources

It is the policy of the college that each online course include one proctored event and that each student registered for the course must participate in that event (OTC Policy 2.21).

Any student who does not participate in the proctored event will receive a failing course grade, unless the student meets the criteria for administrative withdrawal, at which time the student will be withdrawn from the course.  These actions will be taken regardless of the earned grade listed in the gradebook for the student.

Please note:

• to meet the expectations/standards of some accrediting bodies and/or transfer institutions, some online courses at OTC require more than one proctored event  – please check your course syllabus to see how many proctored events your course requires

 

• OTC offers free proctoring services at all its campuses and locations, but if you are not able to use our facilities, you have two options for completing your proctoring requirement:
  • off-campus proctoring – OTC will help you arrange to meet your proctoring requirement at an approved off-campus location, some locations may charge you a fee to use their services
  • online proctoring – OTC has partnered with Proctorio to provide an online proctoring option for our students. There are certain technology requirements associated with this service.

Project HEAL

Your health and safety is our top priority. If you are the victim of sexual assault, sexual violence, domestic violence, dating violence, stalking, or any other form of sexual or interpersonal misconduct, OTC will support you and connect you to the care that you need.

Please contact the Project HEAL victim advocate for more resources and support by emailing swadleyr@otc.edu, or calling 417-447-7859. The Victim Advocate is a confidential employee and does not disclose student information without their direct consent. Resources and areas of assistance that Project HEAL provides includes: court accompaniment, obtaining an ex parte or order of protection, obtaining legal services, finding low-cost counseling, victims resources, safety planning, support during law enforcement interviews and reports, finding transportation, food, clothing, furniture, housing, and emergency pet boarding.

Safety in the Classroom (Crisis Plans)

If an emergency situation arises in the classroom, use your own best judgement to react to the situation.  Your best plan is to visualize and plan for emergency situations before an emergency situation arises, so you are better prepared to make split-second decisions.

Here are some guidelines to help you in that process:

Campus and building maps – Use these campus and location maps to find the location of all exits you may need to use in case of fire or a crisis on campus. The appropriate location to shelter in case of tornado is an interior room with no windows on the first floor of the building.

Run. Hide. Fight –  OTC Safety and Security advocates the philosophy of Run.Hide.Fight.  Please take a moment to familiarize yourself with this philosophy by checking out this Active Shooter Event Quick Reference Guide from the Department of Homeland Security.  You may also wish to view this informational video about Run.Hide.Fight endorsed by the FBI [warning: this video contains a live simulation of an active shooter event]

Crisis Plans – Crisis plans are posted in each classroom. The plan includes procedures to be followed in case of earthquake, fire or explosions, serious illness or injury, suicide, telephone threats and tornadoes. The plan also includes the location of first aid kits and spill kits.

All OTC Safety and Security Officers are trained in CPR and in the use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs). AEDs can be found in the following locations:

SARA (State Authorization for Distance Education)

As a member of the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA), Ozarks Technical Community College (OTC) is authorized to offer its online courses and programs to students residing in other State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA) participating states.

However, SARA has no effect upon professional licensing requirements.  As these requirements might differ from state to state, students seeking to enroll within a program of study leading to professional licensure, certification, etc. should contact the appropriate accrediting organization within their home state for final determination as to whether their state’s licensing/certification requirements would be met upon successful completion of that program of study. Students should contact the Department Chair / Program Director of their intended program of study for help finding the appropriate accrediting organization within their home state.

Interpersonal Violence Prevention

As part of our comprehensive violence prevention program OTC expects all new students, as well as incoming transfer and visiting students, to complete the Not Anymore online interpersonal violence prevention course.  Recognized nationally for its effectiveness, Not Anymore uses the latest prevention techniques and science-based research to educate students about the impact of sexual and relationship violence.

You can access the Not Anymore online training module through the MyOTC portal.  Go to “Getting Started” on the menu on the left side of the screen and choose the “Violence Prevention Training” link – or you can access it directly here.

Standards of Student Conduct

OTC has established guidelines to define appropriate and inappropriate student behavior, both in and out of the classroom. The basic standard of behavior requires a student to comply with, observe and obey state and/or federal laws; the policies, rules and regulations of the college; and orders of the Chancellor, faculty, administrators, and staff of the institution who are charged with the administration of institutional affairs.

A student is not entitled to greater immunities or privileges before the law than those enjoyed by other citizens generally.  He/she is expected to obey the civil statutes of the state of Missouri and the federal government, and the Board of Trustees’ rules and regulations.  He/she may be penalized by the college for violating its standards of conduct whether or not punished by state or federal authorities for the same act.

Computer use may be monitored to ensure accordance with OTC policy.

OTC has a due process for any student who is believed to have violated Board of Trustees policy or the Standards of Student Conduct.  View this process in OTC Policy 5.16.

Title IX Resources

It is the policy of the college to comply with Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972.  The College considers sex discrimination in all its forms to be a serious offense and will not be tolerated.  OTC’s Title IX team is here to receive, respond to, and resolve all complaints of sexual misconduct and concerns about gender equity that affect members of the OTC academic community.

It is important to familiarize yourself our policies regarding Title IX compliance.  Please read our sexual misconduct policy (OTC Policy 4.06).
